Say NO – UNIFEM Campaign
I recently joined the UK branch of UNIFEM, the United Nations Development Fund for Women, and from an online media perspective, have been very impressed by the “Say NO – End Violence Against Women” campaign that was launched November ’09.
Based on country data available, up to 70 per cent of women experience physical or sexual violence from men in their lifetime. The “Say NO” campaign is focused on challenging everyone around the world to take action on this issue. By “everyone” it means individuals, governments and civil society partners. Actions can range from reaching out to students at schools, to volunteering at local shelters, advocating for legislation or donating funds towards programmes that protect women and girls from violence. The initial target on one year is to reach 1 million actions in one year. As of today, almost 250,000 actions have already be taken.
You can learn more about the campaign and how you can contribute to this initiative by visiting http://www.saynotoviolence.org/. I love this little widget which they have designed for the campaign.
