#1 Facebook Tip – Set and Reset your Privacy Settings
Last Wednesday, Facebook developers in California held their 3rd annual meeting, F8 (pronounced “fate”). A number of announcements were made about changes and new features to the popular social networking site. The launch of the “like” button has raised flags again about Facebook’s privacy settings. This new feature gives Facebook users the possibility to give a thumbs up to web pages they like and consequently have that information published on their wall for their friends to see and potentially share this information with others. Check out this BBC piece for more details about this feature and other tools Facebook launched at the conference: Facebook’s bid to rule the web as it goes social.
I followed news of these new features with interest and by Saturday became annoyed at Facebook after reading this article in PC World: Facebook: 5 Privacy Settings You Must Tweak Now. Turns out that, yet again, Facebook has launched new features to its site and then proceeded to default the privacy settings for these features to being “allow”. Why can’t Facebook default your privacy settings to being “private” and then give you the option to edit the settings as you see fit? Is that too much to ask? Anyway, best go help my family and friends update their privacy settings.
Please read the PC World post closely and update your privacy settings!
